Daniel Day Lewis plays an oil man named Daniel. He builds his oil business up from a single well to incredible wealth. He’s shady and oily and gets what he wants. He is invited to dig for oil by a preacher named Eli. He’s shady, too. I didn’t really like this movie very much. I kept hoping it would get better. I think I’m in the minority on this one as it’s up for some awards. The acting is good and the realism gritty. The movie making is good. I found the sound track annoying at times. I loved the font for the title. I just didn’t get this movie. Oh well. I shall rate it the same as yesterdays movie. At least I didn’t get motion sick! I think if these two movies were combined they would make a h*ll of a movie. Shady dude digs for oil out in the desert, and uncovers Alien like monster. I’m not sure where to stick the evangelist. He could talk of doom and predict the future. But that would still be a bit trite.
I hope Episode 4 of Prime Suspect comes tomorrow.

The most memorable movie I saw without reading up on was Alien (the first one). I drank a coke and by the end of the movie I had a sore stomach. I went to see Cloverfield on impulse, because hey, I’m trying to live in the now and, I had a free ticket. I never saw Blair Witch Project for a reason…motion sickness. I watched most of the movie with my eyes closed trying to keep from losing my cookies. Luckily I didn’t miss much. I opened my eyes when it sounded interesting. This movie rips off Planet of the Apes, Gozilla, Alien, Blair Witch Project, and the similarities to the 9/11 catastrophe is unnerving. The monster was pretty cool, though. I will give this one 1.5/acorns and 1/2 of a clive. It might deserve more, but I’m still queasy. I’ll know tomorrow if its the stomach flu.

It’s really a bit sad how real Dilbert seems to me. I’m hoping it’s just me lame ducking it to the end, but I hear the frustration around me even in the new hires and that saddens me. How does one get out of a death spiral? I tried just putting my foot down already but in face of blatant politicking, I’m just a little pile of poo. So. I might as well be Happy Poo!
The Bucket List stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. Morgan Freeman has such a peaceful voice. It has the tone of a man who is sure of who he is. Jack Nicholson plays Jack Nicholson just like he always does. These two guys meet on the Oncology ward where they are being treated by Rob Morrow (that’s Dr. Rob Morrow, Last Starfighter) for cancer that is in terminal stages. They decide to fulfill some dreams before they die and make a list. Since Jack is a kazillionaire (that’s more then a Brazilian, Mr. Bush) they fly to the ends of the earth on his private jet. There were some slow moments, but all in all it was quite entertaining. Jack was almost lovable…heh…NOT! But I will rate it 3/5 acorns. No clives.
I got smart and had both episdoes of Prime Suspect 2 come at the same time. This case involves a body found buried in the garden of an apartment. The first suspect confesses on his death bed, but DCI Tennison suspects he is covering up for some one else. Her boss is trying for a promotion and she wants to be promoted also. She also has to work with Oswalde, a man she had had a fling with in the past. I was not disappointed in the second story. Very intriguing, so I’ve queued up all the rest.

I’m hooked on Prime Suspect. I netflicked disk 1 and was quite upset to find out I needed disc two to complete the story!!! It was so engaging. Helen Mirren is just terrific as DCI Tennison. She is an excellent investigator, but has been passes over because she is a women. When the investigation of a horrible murder appears to be bungled, she makes some breakthrough and gets her chance to show her stuff. In the background she is trying to balance her relationships to family and boyfriend. I finally got my hands on disk 2 and now I’m totally hooked. I just found out there are 7 seasons!
2009 Lost Memories takes place in an alternate universe where Japan rules Korea, and the US and Japan were allies in WW2 and the bomb was dropped on Berlin instead of Hiroshima. Our Korean hero is in the police force and his best friend is Japanese. Our hero is blighted not only by his Koreaness, but also by the fact that his father sided with a mysterious Korean underground organization and was shot by his own collegues. He is haunted by dreams of a woman who wears a necklace with a crescent moon. He is distained by his superiors. He is distained by his Korean brothers for eating like a Japanese. Poor guy. He even has a corny theme song the breaks out inappropriately. This movie has the big budget type effects with helicopters, machine guns and cool hand gliding attacks which seem a bit over the top for the story line. But there is time travel so that counts for something! The turning event in this alternate history is a foiled assassination attempt back at the turn of the century.
Jang Dong-gun, the star of this show was also in The Promise, Taegukgi. According to IMDB, he learned Japanese for this movie and Mandarin for the Promise and he is cute, too. That counts for something. I will rate this one 3/5 acorns because of that.
Work is a struggle. Now I have some guilt and regrets, but also I have that sense of excitement and resolve. 5 months, 16 days, 16 hours, 47 minutes and 14 seconds….

2007 ended in a very nice way…no rain and a blazing sunset. Lucky live Hawaii:)
I had to think about the movie Atonement before writing about it. It is a very sad movie. I normally avoid sad movies:( Keira Knightly and James McAvoy have a flirtation. He is the son of the cook, and she is the daughter of the Lord of the Manor. I love the costumes and the great house. Her green dress is my favorite.
The period costumes hang well on her. James McAvoy shows a nice range of emotions. Keira’s pesky younger sister also has a crush on him. In fact maybe I have a crush on him, too! She observes an few incidents between her sister and Mr. McAvoy and one night she also happens on her cousin being raped. She names James McAvoy, and her cousin goes along with it. James ends up in prison, although he is innocent. The movie jumps back, and fourth and this doesn’t always work. It also spends more then necessary time in Dunkirk. This bit of the War is quite interesting, but it is a little long IMO. The ending is a surprise. According to Wikipedia, “atonement is a doctrine found within both Christianity and Judaism. It describes how sin can be forgiven by God”. Miriam Webster adds, “reparation for an offense or injury”. I thought about this movie a lot after I saw it. Lives are affected by all types of incidents…chance, war, foolishness, accidents, malice and of course regret. If given a chance, humans can make amends, choose to forgive and let go of regrets. I repeat, this is a sad movie. I think it deserves more clives then Hellraiser for sadness. I will rate this movie 3/5 acorns.
A fellow knitter recommended Wool 100%. I suspect I can think about this movie endlessly and not come to many conclusions. I love the visual effects in this movie…the funky house, the animations, the great wool sweater dress. Two elderly sisters are the ultimate clutter junkies. They go out daily and collect stuff others have discarded and bring it home. They are quite selective. When they get home they clean the junk up and draw a picture of it for their scrapbook. One eats and dresses Western and the other Japanese. They move in much the way the sisters in Gormenghast move, as if they are joined at the hip, completing each others sentences and anticipating the next moves. One day they collect some red yarn and after that a young girl shows up knitting a red dress from the yarn, then unraveling it and complaining in a loud annoying way after that that she has to knit it again. I won’t say more for fear someone out there deciphers what it all means. I will rate this 2.5 acorns, no clives. It’s just plain strange and I kind of like that!
